Makar
Sankranti ( 14 January every year )
Sankranti
is the day when the sun enters the respective sun sign. Hence when
the sun enters the sun sign Aries, that day
is called ‘Mesh sankranti, and when it enters Taurus,
that day is called “Vrishabh Sankranti”, and so on and so
forth. Since there are twelve sun signs for one year, there are
also twelve Sankranti’s in a year
Makar
Sankranti marks the commencement of the sun's journey to the
Northern Hemisphere. Since on this day the sun enters the sun sign
Capricon, this day is called the Makar Sankranti. For some reason
not yet clear to this author, this day always falls on the English
date of 14th january
This
is a day of celebration all over the country.Wherever there is a
body of water, people take a dip in the waters on this day and
worship the sun. Also known as Gangasagar Mela, on this day, people
come from all over India for a ceremonial cleansing in the River
Hooghly, near Calcutta. In Gujarat, brightly coloured kites dot
the skies, in celebration of Makara Sankranti.
